What is the environmental or social problems you want to solve?

Problems you choose to address may be related to:

Here is an example of a well-defined problem. Maybe this is even one of the problems you want to solve? (Example) The amount of recyclable and compostable materials that are put into garbage cans and sent to landfill is much too high. I believe the reason is that students and faculty don’t put waste/recycling/compost material in the correct bins because they don’t know what should go in each bin. People at our school may also be apathetic or not aware of how much daily decisions add up. It needs to be much easier to identify the correct bin for each type of material and also it needs to be more engaging and fun. (750 characters max)

In two-three sentences please describe how you would address this problem with an App

List the main features of the app that would allow the user to solve the problem you have identified. Do you need pictures, tracking, maps, messaging, posts, hearts, likes, shares, gamification, tracking, rewards, swipes, or others? As you think through what features to add, put yourself in the user's shoes and think about what you would need this app to do to solve this problem. If the app is genuinely useful to you and allows you to solve the problem efficiently, then there is a good chance it could work for others as well.

(Ex. for the Waste problem example above, Feature #1 the App would allow students to take pictures of their waste as they put it in the correct bin. Feature #2 - each time they save a picture to the App they get 5 points . Feature #3 whoever has the most points at the end of the month wins $50, so it is gamified and has a reward.)

Would your App be a For-Profit or Non-profit?

Is your solution going to generate revenue/money and be a for-profit business or is it purely a public benefit and should be run as a non-profit? There are many for-profit businesses technology companies that generate revenue and do good (Apps for example that help calculate and offset your carbon footprint which are a for-profit with clear environmental benefit.

Learning from others

Identify some Apps that are using functionality similar to what you are thinking with a similar focus or even with a different focus. You want to learn as much as possible from others that have similar functionality and have been very successful and spent years and millions of dollars developing. For example, If you want to create a 30-second video feature to share with friends, you need to understand what makes TikTok so successful and what ideas you can learn or use from TikTok. If you want your users to create lists of favorite environmental activities and share with friends, maybe you can learn something from Spotify and how users create and share playlists.

Wireframe Your Idea

Ok, now your ready for a little fun. It's time to draw your idea on paper, also called wireframing. This can be a very simple drawing of your app with just paper and pencil, or you can use google slides, Canva (Check out the Mobile Mockups Themes), Figma, Google Docs, or any other Application you want just to draw out what your APP could look like and bring it too life. This does not need to be fancy at all, just draw two or three screens of your APP with some of the functionality listed above. You may upload the following file types (.png,.jpg,.doc,.ppt,.pdf) up to 10 MB each.

Here is a very basic example of wireframes for two screens of a waste App that allows the user to search for an item and learn which bin to put it in.
